The Blue Derby Wild, Blue Tier Bioblitz is a weekend of citizen science surveys of high conservation value forests being made available for logging in coming months. It is the first Bioblitz of its type in the forests of north east Tasmania, led by a team of volunteer scientists, field naturalists and nature enthusiasts.
A Biotblitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. The Blue Derby Wild, Blue Tier Bioblitz will focus on areas of threatened forests and glacial refugia ecology. Glacial refugia is an area that did not freeze over in last ice age and repopulated Tasmania when the forests retreated. We are going to explore the cradle of north east Tasmania's forests.
The Bioblitz will run from midday Saturday January 25 to midday Monday January 27, with basecamp at the Weldborough Community Hall, and free camping at the Weldborough Pub campgrounds.
The Bioblitz is being run by volunteers, and all resources are being donated by team leaders and organisers. This event is free to attend and places are limited, so please register to help us allocate you to a survey team of your preference.
